Donald G. McDermott

Don McDermott is a recognized authority in the field of human resources and compensation with over 30 years of related experience as both an internal and external consultant. He works with boards, business owners, and senior managers in the design of compensation and human resources programs.

He has particular expertise in developing strategic business and operational plans, and aligning innovative compensation and human resources programs to meet company objectives. Some recent consulting assignments include the design of short- and long-term incentive plans, sales compensation plans, equity-based plans, and compensation audits relating to compliance.

Prior to founding D.G. McDermott Associates in 1985, Don held senior human resources positions at Bankers Trust Company, NL Industries, Gulf & Western Industries, and M&T Chemicals, Inc.

Over the years he has been active as an officer and director of several professional associations. In 1988 Don was honored by the American Compensation Association/World at Work by being granted its highest award, Life Membership, for his contributions to the field of compensation.

Don has served as an expert witness in compensation-related cases, served on the faculty of American Compensation Association and NYU School of Continuing Education. In addition, Don has authored a number of articles related to compensation and human resources issues.

Don has an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a BA from St. Mary's Seminary and University.

Sandra J. Marshall, Ph.D.

Dr. Sandra Marshall is a senior consultant with over twenty years of experience conducting customer and employee surveys. In addition to surveys, she consults on a wide range of corporate human resources issues including individual and team competency measurement, management selection, appraisal and development, and the impact of major change, e.g., mergers and acquisitions, on employee engagement and satisfaction.

Recent consulting assignments include measuring satisfaction among members of a federal credit union, assessing the performance of the top management team of a Fortune 50 company using feedback from both employees and external customers, and assessing internal client satisfaction with key staff functions such as HR, Legal and Finance.

Prior to becoming a consultant in 1989, Sandra worked as a human resources manager for several large companies. She was most recently at PepsiCo where she was responsible for corporate culture surveys as well as for executive development and succession planning. Before that, she was a vice president at Merrill Lynch, where she was responsible for company-wide research on issues ranging from stockbroker turnover to executive development. In an earlier position at Allergan Pharmaceuticals she assessed the readiness of sales representatives to assume field management positions.

Sandra holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from New York University. She is a licensed psychologist, a member of the American Psychological Association and is past-president of the Metropolitan Association for Applied Psychology (METRO) in New York.

Thomas J. Hackett

Thomas J. Hackett is a partner with D.G. McDermott Associates, LLC. He has held corporate HR and compensation positions with Pitney Bowes, Gillette, Morgan Stanley, and lastly as SVP-HR for Equitable Capital Management. Before joining D.G. McDermott Associates, Tom honed his consulting skills with The Hay Group and then with Aon in their Executive Compensation Consulting practice. His experience covers many industries, organizations of various size, as well as public and privately held businesses.

He instructs three World at Work courses, T2 Accounting and Finance, C2 Job Analysis and Evaluation and T11 Broad Based Equity Programs. He also has taught graduate courses in HR at the New School for Social Research in NYC. He is past Chairman of the Wall St. Compensation and Benefits Association.

Tom has authored numerous articles in the compensation and Human Resources field, co-authored World at Work’s Building Block, Job and Work Analysis, and wrote the chapter on Job Descriptions for the Compensation Guide.

He is an active member of World at Work and has earned the Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) and Global Resources Practitioner (GRP) designations. He is also a member of the Society of Human Resources Management, from which he earned the Senior Human Resources Professional (SPHR) certification. Tom holds a BA from Marist College and an MBA from the University of Connecticut.
